Consulate General of India in Phuentsholing came into being in October 2006. Prior to this, a Liaison Office of the Embassy of India, Thimphu in Phuentsholing existed since 1976. The Consulate has in its jurisdiction the districts of Chukha, Samdrup Jongkhar, Samtse, Sarpang, Dagana and Pemagatshel in Bhutan.

Phuentsholing is a border town in Chukha District of Bhutan and is located right across the Indian town of Jaigaon (State of West Bengal). With a population of over 28,000 (2022 estimate), Phuentsholing is the second largest city in Bhutan. A major portion of Bhutan's trade with India and third countries is done through Phuentsholing border. It also handles a large volume of tourist traffic to/from Thimphu and Paro. Owing to this, Phuentsholing is often known as the gateway to Bhutan.
Phuentsholing also has other GoI offices like Central Water Comission, B.R.O., and liaison offices of various Public Sector Undertakings of India such as Water and Power Consultancy Services Ltd.(WAPCOS).
